Unfortunately before our set an extremely bad situation has unfolded, when 2 female members of our team (one of whom is a recognized Russian-Ukrainian left-wing activist living in Germany) were physically and verbally attacked by several female volunteers working at the festival. Not only that, but Fusion festival didn’t react in any way to that – the attackers faced no repercussions, were not removed from the festival and our female crew members were not provided with any safety guarantees or support by Fusion.

The attackers used extremely sexist, misogynistic and hateful slur and then resorted to physical violence, which is absolutely unacceptable anywhere, let alone at an open minded Festival built on left-wing ideas and supposed to be a safe place for women, LGBTQ and all people in general.

The whole situation arose in the first place due to the people in question attempting to “boycott” our band based on 7 year old accusations that were addressed by us at length back in the day. The accusations in question tried falsely calling us “nationalists”, “homophobes”, “sexists” and used a variety of info taken out of context, incorrect translations or outright made up false facts. The main accusation was about us using a bad word in a song written 15 years ago addressed against Russian neo-nazis – out of context that word could be seen as offensive to women and sex-workers. We have already explained at length why such word was used in the first place and that it was not intended as an offense against anyone, but neo-nazis and that we had not used such words since. Plus we haven’t performed that song in years and never officially released it. All of these accusations were addressed by us 7 years ago when we made full statements, including taking part in a public discussion at Kopi squat in Berlin, mediated by Kopi collective – all of which was accepted and confirmed by German, European and Russian left wing and antifascist collectives.

Moreover in the last decade we have worked hard to support women rights and feminist organizations. We raised funds and awareness for organizations helping survivors of domestic violence, survivors of sexual violence, women refugees. Those organizations that we work with in Russia are branded by authorities as "foreign agents", which makes their work extremely difficult under government pressure. We intend to continue working with those organizations and to further dedicate our work to support their fight for women's rights, supporting feminist NGO's collectives and artists.

The female members of our crew, other women activists, as well as other volunteers of Fusion festival from Russia, Ukraine, Germany and other countries tried contacting the crew in question numerous times for a peaceful discussion and to vouch for us to no avail. Two of our female crew members – one of whom is a recognized Russian-Ukrainian left wing activist and a veteran of antifascist scene, who now lives in Germany and works security at some of the oldest and well-known punk and gay clubs in Berlin, came all the way to the festival specifically to have a conversation about the situation and mediate towards a solution. However the crew in question refused to have a discussion and it all ended in them attacking our friends.

It is extremely unnerving, disappointing and shocking to see that:

a) Aggressive people with clear anger-management issues feel completely free to physically and verbally attack people - in this case other women.

b) Fusion organizers did nothing after the physical assault took place on our friends - the attackers were not removed from the festival, organizers didn't provide any safety zone or made any effort to make sure that our friends would be safe after.

c) That there are groups of people who think that they can dictate their deeply biased, hateful opinions in an authoritarian manner to the festival and other bands. Refusing to partake in any conversation and single handedly deciding who to “cancel”.

d) That the aggressive crew in question decided to shut down their stage completely rather than partake in a discussion about their accusations. While our set was moved to a bigger stage and several other artists were moved to other stages, several female artists couldn’t be accommodated by the festival and had to cancel their performance. This was both a result of the authoritarian actions of the aggressive crew and Fusion organizers’ inability to decisively deal with the situation.

e) the aggressive crew never tried contacting us in the first place to raise the issue with us and try to hear our side, and never made any attempt to reach out to female members of organizations working with us. Instead they have instantly resorted to ultimatums and holding the festival ransom, which contradicts basic norms of open-minded approach.

To sum it up we believe that by resorting to physical violence and using a barrage of various sexist and misogynist curse words addressed at our female crew members - the aggressive group has discredited themselves and their claims against us.

Fusion festival should make a public statement banning the several people involved in the attack on our crew members from ever attending the festival. They should apologize to our female crew members who were attacked for jeopardizing their safety.

If you still have questions about our band, you can do a simple research reading our lyrics, readily available online, seeing our statements on our official social media accounts or you can reach out to numerous left- wing collectives that we have worked for a confirmation that we indeed prove with actions - our strong support for feminism and gay rights; our strong stance against racism, military propaganda and wars, including the war in Ukraine.

We want to say special thanks to volunteers from other stages of Fusion who were ready to form an all-female stage crew to do a show for us as a plan B, and to Roter Platz crew who readily stepped up to welcome us.

We believe that there is no place for violence and authoritarian agenda anywhere, and including the left-wing scene. We all fight the good fight against discrimination, hatred, xenophobia and military propaganda, and we think that we should not let aggressive people that try to force their misguided ideas in a right-wing way, ruin the left-wing scene from the inside and discredit it to unaffiliated people who might turn away from progressive thought when seeing such aggressive behavior. We must stand together and fight for a safe society and safe scene free of bigotry, bullying and discrimination. That’s what holds the scene together - uniting behind the fight for a better and more just society for all, no matter where you are from, what you look like, who you love.

Also echt.
